PHONETICS

Tin has a chemical composition similar to both germanium and lead, and has two possible oxidation states, +2 and the slightly more stable +4. It is a silvery, malleable metal that is not easily oxidized in air, obtained chiefly from the mineral cassiterite as tin dioxide, SnO2.

ELEMENT BRIEF

Circa 3,500 BCE.

DISCOVERY

Old English, tin, from Proto-Germanic *tiną. Cognates include German Zinn and Dutch tin.
